Poet Robert Burns is best known for Auld Lang Syne which is sung traditionally sung on New Year’s Eve in English speaking countries. To celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth, The Royal Mint released a series of Two Pound coins, including this silver proof example. Born in 1759, Burns published his first collection of poems in 1789 and they became hugely successful. He remains of Scotland’s most famous and popular poets, and every year Burns Night is celebrated with haggis and Burns’ poetry. This coin features a line from Auld Lang Syne in Burns’ handwriting - and is the first commemorative coin to have a design based solely on handwriting. It reads ‘we’ll tak a cup a’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne,’ with the legend ‘1759 ROBERT BURNS 1796’. The edge inscription carries another line from the poem ‘SHOULD AULD ACQUAINTANCE BE FORGOT’. On the obverse, is Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of The Queen, the fourth official portrait. One of 6,439, this £2 comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with a certificate of authenticity. It weighs 12.00 grams and is struck in .925 sterling silver with a band of fine gold around the edge.
