Celebrating the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne in 1509, this silver proof piedfort Five Pound coin was inspired by Hans Holbein’s famous portrait. Henry became king at the age of seventeen following the death of his father, Henry VII. Although best known for his six wives and tensions with the Pope, he is also heralded as ‘the Father of the Royal Navy’ and made significant changes to the English Constitution. John Bergdahl, designer of the coin’s reverse, called the King ‘an Enlightened Monarch in an age of Enlightenment’. Bergdahl’s design is not only inspired by Holbein’s majestic portrait of the Monarch, but uses a popular Tudor ‘antique’ rose design as his backdrop. ‘ROSA SINE SPINA,’ or ‘ROSE WITHOUT THORNS,’ reads the edge inscription; a phrase which has been used on coins from the reign of many monarchs including Edward VI and Elizabeth I. The petal shaped tressure which frames the King was used frequently on medieval coins to highlight important figures. There is further symbolism in the rope band surrounding the scene which ties in Henry’s links with the Navy. The cypher ‘Henricus Rex’ was taken from an elaborately engraved gun barrel from the sixteenth century. On the £5’s obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II introduced by The Royal Mint in 1998. The coin comes in its original black box with a numbered certificate of authenticity. In .925 sterling silver and weighing 56.56 grams, this coin is one of just 1,080 issued in this presentation.
