Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and went on to become one of the most influential scientists ever. After the influence of a botany professor at Cambridge, Darwin developed a great interest in natural history. In 1831, he was invited to be a naturalist aboard the now famous HMS Beagle on a five year long voyage to South America. During this time, he sent numerous letters and journals back to his professor, which resulted in wider interest from academia. In 1859, following extensive research, he published his ‘On the Origin of Species by means of natural selection’ which sold out within a day and remains popular. 2009 not only marks the two hundred years sine the naturalist’s birth, but also one hundred and fifty since the publication of his formative book, and the popularisation of the theory of evolution. To celebrate the these anniversaries, The Royal Mint released a series of commemorative Two Pound coins, including this silver proof example. Artist Suzie Zamit used two profiles for her design on the reverse of this commemorative coin. The recognisable profile of Charles Darwin, with his large beard, is facing that of a chimpanzee. The legend reads ‘1809 · CHARLES DARWIN · 2009’ while the edge carries the inscription ‘ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES 1859’. These are paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth official portrait of the Queen on the coin’s obverse. This £2 coin weighs 12.00 grams and comes in its original packaging from the Royal Mint, including the certificate of authenticity. It is struck in .925 sterling silver with a band of fine gold plating around the edge, and is one of 6,608 in this presentation.
