In 2008, two different designs were released by The Royal Mint for the One Pound coin. One featured the Royal Shield which was part of a new series of coin designs, incorporating the 1p up to the 50p in a fractured shield design, while the other looked back to the first £1 coin and depicted the original Royal Arms design. One coin looked forward and one looked back. This silver proof coin is the latter, and would be one of the last coins of this denomination to feature the traditional Royal Coat of Arms first used in 1983. This emblem is used for the monarch's official flag, as well as by courts and governments around the Commonwealth. The arms itself depicts a quartered shield featuring, in two quarters, the three lions of England, in one quarter, the rampant lion of Scotland, and in the final quarter, the harp of Ireland. It is crowned with standing lion wearing the St Edward's Crown. To the left of the shield is another crowned lion, while to the right is the unicorn of Scotland. The motto banner reads 'DIEU ET MON DROIT', or 'God and my right,' while around the edge of the coin is an inscription reading 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' or 'an ornament and a safeguard.' The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty the Queen. A total of 9,134 One Pound coins were issued in this silver proof format, and yours will come with its original packaging and certificate of authenticity. It weighs 9.50 grams and has a diameter of 22.50 millimetres. Struck in .925 sterling silver, this Pound coin is finished to proof standard meaning it is of higher quality and has greater definition than circulating coins.
