Elizabeth I became Queen of England and Ireland on 17 November 1558, following the death of her elder half sister. She was crowned at Westminster Abbey the following year, aged just 25. The last monarch of the House of Tudor, she would rule until her death in 1603. 450 years after her accession, The Royal Mint celebrated the Virgin Queen with a collection of Five Pound coins, including this silver proof edition. This Crown coin features a crowned bust of Elizabeth by silversmith Rod Kelly, inspired by contemporary portraits. This appears within a quatrefoil shape which has Tudor roses in the inner angles with a foliage motif in the two of the outer angles. ‘ELIZABETH REGINA’ appears in curling script above and the anniversary dates in Roman numerals below: ‘MDLVIII’ (1558) and ‘MMVIII’ (2008). Kelly’s design is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Elizabeth II to the obverse, the fourth such portrait used on her coinage. Struck in 28.28 grams of .925 sterling silver, this Five Pound coin measures 38.61 millimetres and comes in its original presentation packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity. This certificate confirms that this coin is from a limited mintage of 9,216.
