In 1996, a competition was launched by Gateshead Council to design a bridge that would link the Gateshead and Newcastle banks of the Tyne. There was a list of requirements, including that it should provide a pedestrian and cycle path, and allow room for ships to pass underneath as well as keeping the quayside clear. It must also fit well with the existing bridges which it would join. The winning design was conceived by WilkinsonEyre architects and engineering firm Gifford. The bridge is made up of two sweeping steel arches, and tilts quickly up to form a large arch to allow ships to pass beneath. Due to its unique shape and movement, it has been nicknamed the Blinking Eye Bridge. This bridge provided inspiration for a One Pound coin as part of a new series introduced by The Royal Mint featuring bridges from the four Home Nations of the UK. This silver proof piedfort £1 is the fourth and final edition of the series, following the Forth Railway Bridge to represent Scotland, and the Menai Straits Bridge from Wales. It displays a design by Edwina Ellis of the Millennium Bridge (for England) surrounded by a border of struts. The denomination 'ONE POUND' is written below and the edge carries a design symbolising bridges and pathways. This double thickness coin weighs 19.00 grams and has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres; it is one of 5,739 in this presentation. The £1 comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with the certificate of authenticity.
