The then Princess Elizabeth, daughter of king George VI and heir presumptive to the British throne, married Greek and Danish Prince, Philip Mountbatten on 20 November 1947. The groom was made Duke of Edinburgh the same morning. Sixty years on in 2007, the royal couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary and The Royal Mint marked the occasion with a range of limited edition Five Pound coins. The reverse of these pieces, including this Piedfort silver proof example, features an intriguing, decorative design, inspired by the south transept rose window at Westminster Abbey, the location of the Queen’s 1947 wedding. Designed by Emma Noble, its accompanied by the anniversary dates (‘1947’ and ‘2007’) and the Latin inscription ’TVEATVR VNITA DEVS’ (translation: ‘may God guard these united’). This is paired with a special, one-off double portrait of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, both facing right, by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley which acknowledges the important role played by Prince Philip over the last 60 years. This commemorative Piedfort Crown coin is struck to proof standard in 56.56 grams of .925 silver and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. It comes in its original capsule and presentation box from The Royal Mint with an information booklet and numbered certificate of authenticity which confirms that this coin is one of only 2,000 minted.
