Sir John Macneill began his career as the chief assistant of Thomas Telford, and was a key figure in the development of the Irish railway system. He was the first professor of Civil Engineering at Trinity College, Dublin, but ended his days in poverty following a fire in 1857. Completed in 1851, Macneill's Egyptian Arch is a railway bridge in Northern Ireland, designed by Sir John Macneill and William Dragon. Its name was coined due to the resemblance of the bridge to the nemes headdresses worn by Ancient Egyptian pharaohs. Macneill's famous bridge is featured on a new series of One Pound coins released by The Royal Mint from 2004. The series began with the Forth Railway Bridge in Scotland, and focused on a different bridge from each of the Home Nations, including the Egyptian Arch to represent Northern Ireland. This piedfort silver proof £1 from 2006 is the third in the series, and features a classic design of the bridge by Edwina Ellis, surrounded by a border of railway station canopy tags. The bridge illustration is paired with the denomination 'ONE POUND' written below. The edge of the coin carries a design reminiscent of bridges and pathways which was used on all four designs. The Egyptian Arch is paired, on the obverse, with Ian Rank-Broadley's popular portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. It is one of 5,129 coins in this presentation and comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, including its certificate of authenticity which contains additional information about the bridge and its engineer. This double thickness coin is struck to proof standard in .925 sterling silver, and has a weight of 19.00 grams. It measures 22.50 millimetres across the diameter.
