2005 marks 200 years since the Battle of Trafalgar. Despite being outnumbered, the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, secured a lauded victory, loosing no ships and wreaking serious damage on a combined Franco-Spanish fleet, seeking to control the English Channel and clear the way for a Napoleonic invasion of Britain. Trafalgar marks the beginning of a period of British naval supremacy that would last until the Second World War and was celebrated at home with a large number of public monuments, including Nelson’s Column, in the centre of Trafalgar Square in central London. This commemorative coin features Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, and the the HMS Temeraire - better known as the Fighting Temeraire - in full sail on choppy seas which lap over onto the rim of the coin, creating a sense of movement. The design is the work of Clive Duncan and shows the word ‘TRAFALGAR’ below with the anniversary dates (1805 and 2005) to either side. This coin was released at the same time as another £5 Crown, designed by James Butler, commemorating the death of Admiral Nelson who was shot by a French musketeer during the engagement. The 2005 Trafalgar coin shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the obverse and features an edge inscription that reads ‘ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY’. Minted in 28.28 grams of .925 sterling silver, this Crown coin has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and a fine proof finish, achieved with multiple strikes of hand-prepared dies. It’s offered in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint which is comprised of a blue velvet case with a printed sleeve. An information booklet doubles as a certificate of authenticity which confirms that this piece is from a limited edition of 30,000 pieces.
