To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the British victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, and the subsequent death in action of Horatio Nelson, the Royal Mint issued a silver proof £5 crown coin. The Viscount Nelson was born in 1758 and began his naval career at the age of just thirteen, on board his uncle's ship. He had a swift and successful climb up the ranks, reaching Post Captain at just twenty-one, and eventually Vice-Admiral at age fifty-seven. Nelson's most famous battle as Admiral was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 which saw the Royal Navy defeat the combined French and Spanish fleet, regaining naval supremacy over Napoleon. While Britain was ultimately victorious at the Battle, celebrations afterwards were marred by the death of the popular Admiral, who was returned to Britain in a barrel of brandy and given a state funeral. This crown coin features a portrait of Nelson in Vice Admiral uniform on the reverse, including the iconic hat, as designed by James Butler. On the obverse side, Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth effigy of The Queen is visible. Specifications of the coin are a total weight of 28.28 grams and a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. It's stuck numerous times in sterling silver to give a high-quality proof finish, and contains 0.8410 troy ounces of pure silver. Each coin is issued complete with the original presentation box and certificate of authenticity, with an issue limit of only 12,852.
