The Gunpowder Plot was a failed assassination attempt against King James I which involved blowing up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament in 1605. It is an event that remains in the conscious of the United Kingdom today, as we mark each 5 November with firework displays. This silver proof Piedfort Two Pound coin, struck to commemorate 400 years since the plot was foiled, bears an edge inscription reading ‘REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER’. Designed by Peter Forster, the reverse design is a circular arrangement of symbols of state - the mace, the crosier and sword - representing the survival of the British establishment. The circular design is also reminiscent of the popular Catherine wheel fireworks used on Bonfire Night. It is paired on the obverse with the definitive fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Struck in 12.00 grams of .925 sterling silver, this Piedfort coin has a fine gold plated outer ring. From a limited edition of 4,394, you’ll receive your Gunpowder Plot coin in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with a certificate of authenticity.
