The Entente Cordiale (Cordial Agreement), signed in 1904, formally ended nearly 1,000 years of intermittent conflict between Britain and France and the beginning of a period of strong Anglo-French relations. The terms primarily addressed colonial demarcation, the agreement was crucial in establishing Franco-British cooperation in the years proceeding the First World War. 100 years on, The Royal Mint celebrated with a new Five Pound coin, amid a series of commemorative events on both sides of the channel, organised for the centenary. The design of this Crown coin shows the female personifications of both nations: Britannia, wearing a helmet and holding a trident and her counterpart, Marianne, wearing the Phrygian cap. This reverse is the work of English artist David Gentleman. ‘ENTENTE CORDIALE’ and the anniversary dates appear around his motif. Gentleman’s reverse is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the obverse. Struck to proof standard in 56.56 grams of .925 sterling silver, this double-weight piedfort coin measures 38.61 millimetres across and is presented in its original box from The Royal Mint alongside a numbered certificate of authenticity. Issue limit: 2,500.
