In 1901, radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi made the first successful transatlantic wireless transmission. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this event, The Royal Mint released this silver proof Two Pound coin. On the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley’s regal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. On the reverse, a design by Robert Evans shows a representation of radio waves spreading across the surface of the coin. The morse code for ’S’ has been incorporated into the design - this was the original signal that was sent from Cornwall to Newfoundland in 1901. The side inscription honours his achievement, reading ‘··· WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC ··· MARCONI 1901’. This limited edition coin is one of a 11,488 minted and is struck in 12.00 grams of .925 sterling silver with a gold plated outer ring. You’ll receive your silver proof Marconi £2 coin in its original packaging from The Royal Mint alongside its certificate of authenticity.
