A red dragon appears in the 'Mabinogion', a collection of the earliest British prose stories, and goes on to be mentioned in 'Historia Brittonum' and myths and legends throughout history. It became the official royal heraldic badge of Wales under the reign of George III and is now a symbol of all things Welsh. Since the 9th century, and possibly before, it has been used to represent Wales and is still today used on government buildings, football teams, and tourism boards. The Royal Mint released this Welsh dragon One Pound in 2000 in a variety of formats, including this piedfort silver proof. It's impressive dragon reverse design, by Norman Sillman, was first used in 1995 as part of a four part series of heraldic designs representing the four Home Nations - with a lion rampant for Scotland and a Celtic Cross for Northern Ireland. In 1999, the series was begun again with the new Royal effigy. The Scottish lion issued first, and this Welsh dragon design released by The Royal Mint one year later. It would be followed by coins representing Northern Ireland and England. The design features a left facing dragon with wings open and leg raised, with the denomination, 'ONE POUND' inscribed below. Edge inscription reads 'PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD' which translates to 'true I am to my country.' On the obverse is Ian Rank Broadley's fourth official portrait of The Queen. Prior to the current bimetallic One Pound coin, this denomination were round and of one colour. Standard coins have a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and a weight of 9.50 grams. This silver proof version is struck in .925 sterling silver at double thickness giving a weight of 19.00 grams and is one of 9,994 issued in this presentation. It comes in its original presentation from The Royal Mint with its certificate of authenticity.
