Where were you when the clock struck 12.00 on 31 December 1999? To celebrate entering the new millennium The Royal Mint offered a range of commemorative Crowns. This edition was the first British coin to be struck in .999 silver. It features a reverse designed by Jeffrey Matthews - better known for his stamps. His engraving shows a pair of clock hands, set to twelve o’clock, superimposed over a map of the British Isles which is picked out in 22 carat gold. The dial sits on the approximate location of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. This clever design which represents the moment 1999 ended and the year 2000 began shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the obverse. The edge bears the words ‘WHAT’S PAST IS PROLOGUE,’ a quote from Shakespeare’s The Tempest and a hopeful vision of the future. Minted in 28.28 grams of fine silver, this proof coin has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. Its face value is Five Pounds. From a limited edition presentation, this millennium coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Millennium coins with this design were also issued with the year 1999 to the obverse: this is the 2000 version.
