This Fifty Pence piece celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Public Libraries Act. Passed in 1850, this act of parliament gave local councils the power to set up free libraries. The Public Libraries Act grew out of a movement to improve access to education and information for all. Thousands of libraries open today in the UK can trace their origins back to this landmark piece of legislation and the political movement that created it. The reverse of this commemorative libraries 50p is the work of sculptor Mary Milner Dickens. Her design shows a book, its pages turning, which forms the roof of a neoclassical library with a columned front. Between cornice and architrave are the words ‘PUBLIC LIBRARIES’. The anniversary dates - ‘1850’ and ‘2000’ - are featured above. ’50 PENCE’ appears within the pages of the book. Dickens is also the artist responsible for the 2003 Suffragettes 50p and the 2001 Death of Queen Victoria £5 Crown. Her libraries design is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, used on British coins between 1998 and 2015. This example is struck in 16.00 grams of .925 silver and is twice the weight and thickness of an average fifty pence. Designed for collectors, these piedfort coins were struck to a flawless proof finish, allowing you to enjoy a higher level of detail. Only 5,721 were issued. This Public Libraries Act 50p is offered in its original presentation packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
