The Royal Mint released this Scottish One Pound in 1999 in a variety of formats, including this piedfort silver proof version. Its reverse design, by Norman Sillman, features a lion rampant surrounded by a decorative ring with the denomination 'ONE POUND' below. Until the Act of Union of 1707 bringing together England and Scotland, the Scottish lion rampant was a popular feature on Scottish coinage. It has been part of the Royal Arms of Scotland since the thirteenth century and a fitting representation of Scottish identity. This design by Norman Sillman was first used in 1994 as part of a four part series of heraldic designs representing the four Home Nations - with a Celtic Cross for Northern Ireland and a dragon for Wales. In 1999, the series was begun again for the new Royal portrait. This Scottish heraldic design was followed by the others in subsequent years, finishing with the English lions in 2002. The edge inscription of this silver proof Pound reads 'NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT' which translates to 'NOONE PROVOKES ME WITH IMPUNITY.' On the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth official portrait of The Queen. Prior to the current bimetallic One Pound coin, this denomination were round and of one colour. Standard coins have a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and a weight of 9.50 grams. This double thickness silver proof version weighs 19.00 grams, and is struck in .925 sterling silver and is one of 9,975 issued in this presentation. It comes in its original presentation from The Royal Mint with its certificate of authenticity.
