This 1998 silver proof One Pound coin features a design by Eric Sewell originally used on the very first £1 coin in 1983. To mark the switch from Raphael Maklouf's third official effigy of The Queen to Ian Rank-Broadley's new, fourth effigy, this special edition £1 was released by the Royal Mint, bringing together past and present coin designs. The reverse design features the Royal Coat of Arms which used for the monarch's official flag, as well as by courts and governments around the Commonwealth. The arms itself depicts a quartered shield featuring, in two quarters, the three lions of England, in one quarter, the rampant lion of Scotland, and in the final quarter, the harp of Ireland. It is crowned with standing lion wearing the St Edward's Crown. To the left of the shield is another crowned lion, while to the right is the unicorn of Scotland. The motto banner reads 'DIEU ET MON DROIT', or 'God and my right,' while around the edge is an inscription reading 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' or 'an ornament and a safeguard.' A total of 13,863 One Pound coins were issued in this silver proof format, and yours will come with its original packaging and certificate of authenticity. It weighs 9.50 grams and has a diameter of 22.50 millimetres. Struck in .925 sterling silver, this Pound coin is finished to proof standard meaning it is of higher quality and has greater definition than circulating coins.
