It’s hard to imagine what Britain was like before the establishment of the National Health Service. The UK’s publicly-funded healthcare system was launched in 1948 with three core principles: that it should meet the needs of all Brits, that care should be free at the point of delivery and that its services be based on clinical need, not the ability to pay. The architect of the scheme which came into being as part of a raft of post-war social reforms, was Labour Health Minister, Aneurin Bevan. Today, the NHS sees more than a million patients a day and is the fifth largest employer in the world. Issued for the 50th anniversary of the National Health Service, this Fifty Pence was designed by David Cornell. He’s probably most famous among coin collectors for the £5 Crown he designed after the death of Princess Diana. His NHS reverse design shows light radiating from a pair of cupped hands. The words ‘FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY’ appear above with ’50’ between the hands and ‘PENCE’ below. The NHS logo appears five times around the top of the design. The obverse shows the fourth official coinage portrait of her majesty the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley, introduced in this year. This 1998 piedfort 50p is composed of 16.00 grams of .925 sterling silver. That’s twice the weight of an average Fifty Pence. This example is struck to flawless proof standard and is one on only 5,117 issued. It comes in its original presentation box from the royal mint with a certificate of authenticity.
