Following the devastation and destruction of the Second World War, fifty nations came together in San Francisco in June 1945 to discuss the formation of the United Nations. On the 24 October that year, the United Nations charter was ratified and the member states committed to maintaining world peace and security, and working for social progress. Fifty years later, in 1995, The Royal Mint honours the anniversary by releasing a series of commemorative Two Pound coins, including this Piedfort silver proof version. They were designed by Michael Rizzello, a renowned sculptor who had himself done military service during and after WWII. He had first hand experience of a world at war and what it meant to have nations working together to prevent it. His design features the United Nations emblem and number 50 surrounded by a cluster of flags. He stated that the flags are purely symbolic, and he “avoided any reference to number, individual member states, or their perceived importance; simply, nations uniting around and into the United Nations.’ The legend reads: ‘NATIONS UNITED FOR PEACE 1945-1995’. Rizzello’s design is paired with Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of the Queen on the obverse, the third official effigy. It is struck in .925 sterling silver and weighs 31.96 grams. 10,000 were issued in this presentation. The double thickness coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, with numbered certificate of authenticity.
