The earliest recorded use of the Scottish 'lion rampant' emblem was in 1222 when it was used by the king, Alexander II. Since 1603, the lion design has been included on the Royal Arms and Royal Banners of the monarchs of Scotland, and subsequently the monarchs of Britain. It is still included on the Royal Standard of the United Kingdom today. In 1994, a new series of One Pound coins was launched by the Royal Mint, using heraldic designs to represent the four home nations of the UK, including this silver proof Scottish edition designed by Norman Sillman. It began with a design for Scotland, before moving on to Wales, Northern Ireland, and finishing with England. This series was repeated in 1999 when Raphael Maklouf's third portrait of the Queen was replaced by Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth. The Scottish design on both editions features the traditional lion rampant facing left within a double tressure flory counter-flory. The denomination of 'ONE POUND' is written below, while the edge carries an inscription of 'NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT', which translates to 'no-one provokes me with impunity.' The obverse features Maklouf's elegant portrait of The Queen. This One Pound coin is struck in .925 sterling silver and weighs 9.50 grams, it has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and is finished to high quality proof standard. One of 25,000 issued by The Royal Mint in this presentation, it comes with its original packaging and certificate of authenticity.
