The oak tree is the national tree of England, as well as several other countries around the world. During the time of Oliver Cromwell, couples could be married under oak trees, and crowns of oak leaves were worn by ancient rulers. Oak was used until the mid-nineteenth century on British Navy vessels, while the official march of the Royal Navy is titled 'Heart of Oak.' It symbolises strength, longevity and wisdom, and can be found across the British Isles. In recognition of this heritage and symbolism, this silver proof One Pound coin representing England features, on the reverse, a mighty oak tree encircled by the Royal Diadem, designed by Leslie Durbin. Below the oak design, the denomination 'ONE POUND' is transcribed. Around the edge of this silver proof coin is the inscription 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' which translates to 'an ornament and a safeguard.' This design is paired with Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse, the third official effigy of The Queen. The first One Pound coins were issued in 1983, their reverse featured a design of the Royal Coat of Arms. The following year, a new series of £1 designs was launched using national symbolic plants from each of the Home Nations, from the Leek of Wales to the Thistle of Scotland. Following the first run of these four designs, the series was restarted in 1990. This silver proof coin featuring the oak tree of England was the final coin issued in this second series, and is one of 13,065 issued. Comprised of .925 sterling silver and with a weight of 9.50 grams, this coin is finished to proof standard giving a better quality and definition. It has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and is presented in the original packaging from The Royal Mint with its certificate of authenticity.
