The daffodil, which is worn on St David's Day, is commonly associated with Wales as its national natural emblem. However, Wales and the Welsh are also associated with the leek. Myths and legends abound about why the leek would be the Welsh national emblem, but one story tells how St David told the Welsh to wear leeks to distinguish between ally and enemy during battles with the Saxons. Shakespeare also writes that the Welsh archers wore leeks at the Battle of Agincourt. Symbolically, leeks are now seen to protect against wounds in battle and to protect against evil spirits. In recognition of this heritage and symbolism, this silver proof One Pound coin representing Wales features, on the reverse, a thriving leek plant encircled by the Royal Diadem, designed by Leslie Durbin. Below the leek design, the denomination 'ONE POUND' is transcribed. Around the edge of this silver proof coin is the inscription 'PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD' which translates to 'true I am to my country.' This design is paired with Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse, the third official effigy of The Queen. The first One Pound coins were issued by The Royal Mint in 1983; their reverse featured a design of the Royal Coat of Arms. The following year, a new series of £1 designs was launched using national symbolic plants from each of the Home Nations, from the Leek of Wales to the Thistle of Scotland. Following the first run of these four designs, the series was restarted in 1990. This 1990 silver proof coin featuring the Welsh leek was the first coin issued in this second series, and is one of 23,277 issued. Comprised of .925 sterling silver and with a weight of 9.50 grams, this coin is finished to proof standard giving a better quality and definition. It has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and is presented in the original packaging from The Royal Mint with its certificate of authenticity.
