According to legends, the thistle became important to Scotland when an invading Norseman stepped on a thistle and cried out, alerting Scots to the invasion. The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III in the thirteenth century. It was used on Scottish coins under James III and appeared regularly on currency, until 2008 when the crowned thistle 5 Pence ceased to be minted. In 1984 a new series of designs was issued for One Pound coins, featuring the national flora or each of the Home Nations, from the oak of England to the leek of Wales. During the series, which includes this silver proof piedfort version, the obverse portrait of the Queen switched from the second by Arnold Machin, to the third by Raphael Maklouf. Therefore, in 1989, this second thistle design was minted to ensure that there were flora designs with Maklouf's portrait. On the reverse is a design by Leslie Durbin featuring a prosperous thistle plant encircled by the Royal Diadem. The denomination of 'ONE POUND' is inscribed below and the edge inscription reads 'NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT,' or 'no-one provokes me with impunity.' This double thickness £1 coin is struck in .925 sterling silver and struck to proof quality. It weighs 19.00 grams and has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres. One of 10,000 released in this presentation, this coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, including the certificate of authenticity.
