This Piedfort Two Pound coin set of two commemorates the 300th anniversary of the Claim of Right and Bill of Rights, which dictated the power of the monarchy, the right to free elections, and who could impose taxation, among many other directives. In February 1689, Prince William and Princess Mary of Orange were presented with this Declaration of Rights, partly in response to the abuses of power by King James II. The declaration passed as the Bill of Rights in December of that year, while the Convention of Estates in Scotland adopted the equivalent Claim of Right in April. Many of the principles are still relevant and utilised today, especially in legal cases. In celebration of these landmark pieces of legislation, The Royal Mint released a set of two commemorative Piedfort coins, presented here in their original packaging with certificate of authenticity. Both feature, on the reverse, a design by John Lobban. The design uses the cypher of William and Mary, woven around the parliamentary mace. Underneath, are the dates 1689 and 1989 marking the three hundred year history. The Bill of Rights coin carries a legend reading ‘TERCENTENARY OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS’, with St Edward’s Crown below. The Claim of Right similarly reads ‘TERCENTENARY OF THE CLAIM OF RIGHT’, with the Crown of Scotland instead. The obverse of both Two Pounds carry Raphael Maklouf’s effigy of The Queen, the third official portrait. Each weighing 31.96 grams with a diameter of 28.40 millimetres, they are struck in .925 sterling silver. An issue limit of 10,000 was imposed for sets in this presentation.
