Northern Ireland is commonly associated with the flax plant. During the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the textile industry boomed in Ulster, especially linen which is made from flax. The Ulster linen industry employed over 70,000 people and helped cities like Belfast more than double in population between 1841 and 1871. While linen is still made in Northern Ireland today on a smaller scale, the flax plant remains important, and is used as the emblem of the Northern Ireland Assembly. In recognition of this heritage, this piedfort silver proof One Pound coin representing Northern Ireland features, on the reverse, a prosperous flax plant encircled by the Royal Diadem, designed by Leslie Durbin. This 1986 coin is part of a four part series, authorised by The Queen in 1983 for the new £1 coins featuring a natural floral symbol for each of the Home Nations, from the Oak Tree of England to the Leek of Wales. Below the flax design, the denomination 'ONE POUND' is transcribed. Around the edge of this silver proof coin is the inscription 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' which translates to 'an ornament and a safeguard.' This design is paired with Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse, the third official effigy of The Queen. Comprised of .925 sterling silver and with a weight of 19.00 grams, this double thickness coin is finished to proof standard giving a better quality and definition. It has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and is one of 15,000 issued. This collectable piece is presented in the original packaging from The Royal Mint, and comes with its certificate of authenticity.
