Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee saw celebrations across the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. From bonfire beacons to renaming lines on the London Underground, and from Royal processions to the granting of city status for Derby, the celebrations had lasting impact. The first twenty five years of The Queen’s reign had seen big changes in society, culture, and politics at home and abroad, not least the decimalisation of British currency in 1971. This silver proof £5 Crown is one of 377,000 such pieces released to mark the anniversary and is the second to be released in decimal format. Prior to decimalisation, crowns had carried the value of 5 shillings; this was changed to 25 pence after 1971. However, as the cost of metal, manufacturing, and distribution increased, the crown was changed to the higher value of £5 by 1990. The four early Twenty-Five Pence designs, including this Jubilee design, curiously do not display their denomination inscribed as other modern coins do. Neither the obverse or reverse of this commemorative coin display designs that were used in regular circulation, although they were both designed by Arnold Machin. The obverse depicts an equestrian portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, showing her in her Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards uniform. The design is reminiscent of the coronation Crown of 1953. On the opposite side, the reverse features the two anointing objects of the Crown Jewels, the Ampulla and the spoon. Surrounding these is an intricate forget-me-not floral garland, with a Royal Crown in the middle top. This £5 Crown is struck in .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 38.61 milimetres. With a weight of 28.28 grams and finished in proof quality, this collectible piece comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint.
