Gold proof 50p from a limited edition presentation of 450 coins. On 15 February 1971, the UK formally decimalised its currency, overturning a centuries old system in which the pound was made up of 20 shillings or 240 pence. Decimal Day was a major success for The Royal Mint, taking years of planning and the establishment of a new factory in Llantrisant, Wales. Fifty Years on in 2021, the Mint celebrated with a range of commemorative Fifty Pence pieces, issued to mark the occasion. These coins feature Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the obverse, in use since 2015. This is paired with a nostalgic reverse by graphic designer, Dominique Evans. Her creation takes inspiration from the designs of the old coins that were removed from circulation after 1971. A wren, the masts of the Golden Hind and the head of Britannia are instantly recognisable. This edition is struck in 15.50 grams of 22 carat gold and has a 27.30 millimetre diameter. It’s finished to proof standard. Intended for collectors, proof coins are struck multiplet times with hand finished dies for a superior, high-definition finished. It comes in its original presentation box with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
