2019 St Helena Una And The Lion £5 Five Sovereign Gold Proof

2019 St. Helena Una and the Lion
(VAT Exempt)
The gold Una and the Lion Five Pound coin struck in 1839 has long been considered amongst the most beautiful coins in the world. Somewhere between 300 and 500 examples were minted, intended only for collectors. Surviving examples achieve astonishing prices when they come to the market. The design - the work of Royal Mint Chief Engraver William Wyon - features a crowned young woman, holding an orb and directing a lion with her sceptre. It was inspired by an episode in Edmund Spencer’s epic poem, The Faerie Queene but the image can also be said to represent the recently enthroned Queen Victoria, guiding her nation (the English lion). This sought-after design has been remastered by the East India Company for a range of coinage, minted in partnership with the issuing authority of the island of Saint Helena. The reissue celebrates 200 years since the birth of Victoria and mirrors a similar release in The Royal Mint’s Great Engravers series. This Five Sovereign piece is among the largest issued with the 2019 St Helena Una design and is composed of 39.94 grams of 22 carat gold. Only 200 of these Quintuple Sovereign coins were issued worldwide and this one is offered in it is original box with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
