2018 The Snowman 50p Silver Proof

UK18SMSP-BOXED
£75.00
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Raymond Briggs' magical and moving tale, The Snowman, The Royal Mint released a commemorative Fifty Pence coin. Briggs' modest story was never intended to be the Christmas phenomenon it became. The tale follows a young boy's snowman who comes to life and takes him on a memorable nighttime adventure. The next morning, the boy wakes to find the snowman has sadly melted. Conceived to introduce children to the concept of mortality, it has become a Christmas favourite. This is thanks to a Santa Claus scene in the Boxing Day 1982 television adaptation for Channel 4, in which the boy was named James. The film is scored to 'Walking in the Air' performed by child tenor soloist, Peter Auty, which was later covered by fifteen-year-old Aled Jones in 1985. The Snowman has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 15 languages. This Silver Proof coin is the perfect Christmas gift for the nostalgic collector rediscovering this childhood classic. It features, on the obverse, a colourful illustration from Snowman Enterprises of the snowman flying across the sea holding tight to James' hand. It is a peaceful and comforting design, fitting with the original story. It comes in the original packaging from The Royal Mint, including an acrylic display case which allows you to view both sides of the coin without handling it. The obverse features Jody Clark's official portrait of The Queen, a design introduced in 2015 as the fifth effigy. One of 20,831, this 50p is struck in .925 sterling silver and finished to proof standard - a quality much higher and more detailed than circulating coins. It has a diameter of 27.30 millimetres and weighs the standard 8.00 grams.
