£270.00
2014 Chinese Year of the Horse 1oz silver coin - the first release in the Royal Mint's Shēngxiào series. This proof equine edition celebrates the seventh animal of the Chinese Zodiac, which is said to produce outgoing and personable leaders for those born in its year. Reverse designer Wuon-Gean Ho melds English and Chinese culture through depicting the majestic animal alongside Oxfordshire's Uffington White Horse. This is complemented by Ian Rank-Broadley's definitive effigy of Elizabeth II to obverse. The Mint struck this 38.61 millimetre coin in .999 fine silver to its gleaming proof quality, achieving a gross weight of 31.21 grams. While officially subjected to an issue limit of 8,888, auction house Spink suggests only 8,347 of these 1oz silver coins were issued to collectors overall. This limited pre-owned coin arrives complete with the traditional red envelope and numbered certificate of authenticity, each housed inside the original Royal Mint presentation box.

British and Chinese artist Wuon-Gean Ho presents a traditional, zodiac-accurate, horse in muscular motion alongside '馬', the Chinese symbol for horse. Below features the chalk Uffington Horse, making this Chinese New Year reverse a cultural fusion. Legend reads: 'YEAR OF THE HORSE · 2014'.

Significance Of The Horse

Horses have a strong alternative case to make for the title of man's best friend. In China they are highly respected and have long been in agricultural, social, and military service.
