A commemorative gold proof Two Pound coin was released by The Royal Mint in 2013 to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the golden Guinea coin. First minted in 1663, under the reign of Charles II, the golden guinea was originally equivalent to 20 shillings. However, the rises in the price of gold relative to silver caused the value of the Guinea to increase, with a height of 30 shillings being recorded. By the time the last Guinea was struck in 1813, the coin had a face value of 21 shillings. Its name was inspired by the Guinea coast in Africa, where the gold originated. Even though the Guinea was demonetised in 1817, the denomination is still culturally present in the UK today, particularly in horse racing. The most popular format was the spade Guinea used between 1787 and 1799 and features the spade-shaped shield fashionable during the 18th century. Artist Anthony Smith was inspired by this classic design for this anniversary coin and beautifully recreated it on the reverse of this coin. Around the royal arms is a legend reading 'ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLDEN GUINEA 2013'. The edge inscription is taken from a poem by 19th century poet Stephen Kemble: 'WHAT IS A GUINEA? 'TIS A SPLENDID THING'. On the obverse of this 22 carat collector's piece is Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fourth definitive portrait of her. This pre-owned proof £2 coin weighs 15.96 grams and has a standard diameter of 28.40 millimetres, giving it a fine gold weight of 0.4708 troy ounces. It comes in its original limited edition packaging which consists of a presentation box and certificate, with only 284 coins being released by the Mint in this presentation. Included in our price is insured shipping to UK addresses.
