The Royal Mint marked the 350th anniversary of the restoration of the monarchy with a set of 2010 Five Pound coins, with this edition being the piedfort-style platinum proof version. Only 100 coins were authorised by the Mint in this edition, making them a sought-after collector's piece. In May 1660, the Interregnum period formally came to an end when the exiled King Charles II was invited to return to Britain from continental Europe, restoring the Stuart (Stewart) monarchy in England, Scotland and Ireland. During the Interregnum, the Protectorate consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland was governed under a republican administration, with Oliver Cromwell the prominent 'Lord Protector' during this era. His son, Richard, became Lord Protector on his death in 1658, but resigned nine months later in 1659 due to a lack of commanding authority. This paved the way for the return of Charles II. Each coin features a specially designed reverse showing a royal crown over tied sprigs of oak leaves, thistles and daffodils. The design, which also features the interlinked double C monogram that featured on Charles II's coinage, is the work of David Cornell. This is paired with the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was used on British coinage between 1998 and 2015. The coin itself weighs 94.20 grams, has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and is struck to a high quality proof standard. Each piece comes in the original Royal Mint packaging, which consists of a presentation box, certificate and information booklet. Available with free UK delivery.
