Piedfort 999.5 platinum proof Five Pound coin struck by the Royal Mint to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the accession of King Henry VIII. Henry was king of England from 1509 until 1547 and is best known for his six marriages and his role in the English Reformation. The reverse of this Crown coin features a full-length portrait of Henry VIII, modelled on a now lost painting of the king by Hans Holbein the Younger. The instantly-recognisable figure divides a royal 'HR' cypher and stands within a treasure of arcs. The design was crafted by John Bergdahl who is the artist behind a number of coins for The Royal Mint. The legend reads 'THE ACCESSION OF HENRY VIII 1509' and the denomination appears below. The obverse of this collectable £5 Crown shows Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth official coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The edge reads 'ROSA SINE SPINA' - 'A rose without a thorn' - a legend that graces many coins from King Henry's reign. Just 100 of these 2009 piedfort Henry VIII coins were issued in .9995 platinum. They're struck in 94.20 grams of fine platinum to impeccable proof standard with mirrored surfaces from edge to edge. Our pre-owned example come in their original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed. A premium piece that's challenging to acquire.
