To commemorate 450 years since the accession of Queen Elizabeth I, the Royal Mint released a set of collectable Five Pound Crown coins, with this edition struck in 99.95% fine platinum. Only 125 of these coins have been issued by the Mint in this presentation. Elizabeth Tudor ascended to the throne aged just 25 in November 1558, following the death of her elder half sister, Queen Mary. She was crowned at Westminster Abbey in January 1559, and immediately set out a different style of rule to her unpopular half sister, bringing much stability to the realm. She became the last monarch of the House of Tudor as she left no immediate heirs to her throne, and therefore became known as the Virgin Queen. Good Queen Bess died in March 1603, having ruled for nearly 45 years, and was succeeded by her distant cousin, James VI of Scotland. This double-thick £5 coin features a crowned bust of Elizabeth I by silversmith Rod Kelly, who took inspiration from contemporary portraits. This appears within a quatrefoil shape which has Tudor roses in the inner angles with a foliage motif in the two of the outer angles. The inscription 'ELIZABETH REGINA' appears in curling script above and the anniversary dates in Roman numerals below: 'MDLVIII' and 'MMVIII'. Kelly's design is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's engraving of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, which is the fourth such portrait used on UK coinage. Your pre-owned coin is offered with the original Royal Mint presentation box with certificate, and specifications are a weight of 94.20 grams and a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. A perfect gift option for those interested in coinage and the history of the monarchy, with free delivery to UK addresses included in our price.
