2004 Platinum proof piedfort coin from The Royal Mint celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Entente Cordiale, with only 501 pieces issued in this presentation. The Entente Cordiale (Cordial Agreement), signed in 1904, formally ended nearly 1,000 years of intermittent conflict between Britain and France and the beginning of a period of strong Anglo-French relations. The terms primarily addressed colonial demarcation and the agreement was crucial in establishing Franco-British cooperation in the years proceeding the First World War. 100 years on in 2004, The Royal Mint celebrated it with a collection of Five Pound coins, amid a series of commemorative events on both sides of the channel, organised for the centenary. The design of this platinum proof Crown coin shows the female personifications of both nations: Britannia, wearing a helmet and holding a trident and her counterpart, Marianne, wearing the Phrygian cap. This reverse is the work of English artist David Gentleman. 'ENTENTE CORDIALE' and the anniversary dates appear around his motif. Gentleman's reverse is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Struck to proof standard in 94.20 grams of .9995 fine platinum, this pre-owned double-weight piedfort coin measures 38.61 millimetres across and is presented in its original box from The Royal Mint alongside a numbered certificate of authenticity.
