Gold proof Millennium Five Pound coin with a limited edition of 1,487. The Royal Mint released a selection of commemorative £5 Crown coins in 2000 to celebrate entering the third millennium AD. They complement the Five Pound coins issued the year before, which have exactly the same design except on the obverse with the year date 1999. This 916.7 fine gold proof edition has been struck multiple times using hand-polished dies to give a really sharp finish, far better than on ordinary circulation coins. On the reverse, a simple yet striking clock design is visible, with the clock hands pointing to the very top of the coin, signifying midnight. Either side of the clock hands are the years 1999 and 2000, with an outline of the British Isles placed in the centre with the text 'ANNO DOMINI'. This clever engraving is the work of Jeffery Matthews, who is best known for designing stamps. The obverse shows the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. It's her fourth portrait to feature on UK coinage. William Shakespeare is quoted on the edge of the coin, with the inscription reading 'WHAT'S PAST IS PROLOGUE'. The coin weighs a total of 39.94 grams, has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and is legal tender for £5 / Five Pounds. You'll receive your limited edition pre-owned UK coin complete with presentation box and certificate, with the coin housed in a protective capsule. It’s advised that you avoid handling your collectable proof coin in order to preserve the pristine proof finish.
