In anticipation of the world entering the third millennium AD, the Royal Mint released a selection of commemorative Five Pound coins in 1999. They complement the Five Pound coins issued the year after, which have exactly the same design except on the obverse with the year date 2000. This edition is the silver proof coin, which is struck numerous times using polished dies to give a near-perfect finish. 49,057 of these collector's pieces were minted in 1999. On the reverse, a simple yet striking clock design is visible, with the clock hands pointing to the very top of the coin, signifying midnight. On either side of the clock hands are the years 1999 and 2000, with an outline of the British Isles placed in the centre with the text 'ANNO DOMINI'. You'll see the clock hand pivot at Greenwich, which is the traditional centre of the worldwide time zone system. This clever engraving was the work of Jeffrey Matthews, the noted stamp designer. The obverse shows the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. William Shakespeare is quoted on the edge of the coin, with the raised lettering reading 'WHAT'S PAST IS PROLOGUE'. The coin weighs 28.28 grams, has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and a fine silver weight of 0.841 troy ounces. You'll receive your limited edition, pre-owned coin in the original Royal Mint presentation box, complete with a certificate of authenticity and an information booklet.
