One of the few pre-1997 gold proof Fifty Pence coins is the 1994 D-Day 50p, released in a limited edition of 1,877 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the biggest amphibious military assault in history. On the 6th of June 1944, the militaries of Great Britain, the United States and Canada launched Operation Overlord: an attack on German-occupied France from the land, sea, and sky. Five beachheads were targeted by the Allied Forces, who codenamed the landing sites 'Utah', 'Omaha', 'Gold', 'Juno' and 'Sword'. What is most notable about this UK 50p coin design is that it is the work of someone who had childhood memories of the event occurring - John Mills. He imagines the planes and the ships as they were on that damp morning in June 1944, heading into the battle zone over the horizon. On the obverse to Mills' design is Raphael Maklouf's popular engraving of Queen Elizabeth II, which was her third official effigy used on circulating coinage. Your collector's piece is manufactured to The Royal Mint's proof standard, which is achieved with multiple strikes using hand-polished dies to give an immaculate mirror finish. It weighs 26.32 grams, measures 30.00 millimetres in diameter and is struck in 22 carat (9167 fine) gold. This UK coin is the last Fifty Pence piece to be issued with a commemorative design before the specifications were reduced in 1997. The larger 50p coins were demonetised in 1998, which technically means this coin has no legal tender value. The original limited edition presentation box and numbered certificate is included alongside a protective capsule.
