Buy a 1994 D-Day 50p Gold Proof

This 1994 gold proof 50p coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of D-Day: the largest seaborne invasion in history. The Normandy Landings of 6 June 1944 began the liberation of Europe and paved the way for Allied victory on the Western Front. John Mills, who had childhood memories of D-Day, marked the event fifty years on with a depiction of Allied forces filling the sea and sky for the reverse of this 50p. It's a design beloved by UK coin collectors, and seen to its best advantage on this 22-carat gold proof coin from The Royal Mint. This was one of the last large-sized 50ps and weighs in at 26.32 grams. One of just 1,877 of its kind issued, this pre-owned piece is supplied in the original case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.

Obverse Portrait Of The Queen

The obverse of this D-Day commemorative coin features Raphael Maklouf's third definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, paired with an inscription which reads 'ELIZABETH II D · G · REG · F · D · 1994'.

Normandy Landings Reverse

John Mills' reverse shows a dynamic scene with landing craft in the water and planes in the skies above—an evocative recreation of the beaches of Normandy. The words' 50 PENCE' are shown on the lower right.

Old Large Gold Proof 50p

This 50p was struck to the old, larger specification in 26.32 grams of solid 22-carat gold with a fine proof finish. The coin measures 30.00 millimetres in diameter, making it somewhat larger than modern Fifty Pence pieces.

Sought-After Royal Mint Coin

The Royal Mint authorised the release of some 2,000 D-Day 50ps in gold, but it's recorded that 1,877 were actually issued. We offer pre-owned examples of this popular design in the original presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
