Proof finish 1973 EEC 50p in its original presentation case. This was the first commemorative Fifty Pence and it was issued to celebrate the United Kingdom joining the European Economic Community. Founded in 1957, the EEC brought economic cooperation between member states and was eventually absorbed into the European Union. The reverse of this coin features nine hands, joined in a circle, representing the fact that the UK was the ninth country to join. Look carefully and you can see that one hand is smaller and more feminine than the others, perhaps representing Her Majesty the Queen. The obverse features the second definitive coinage portrait of Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. Coins with this same design did circulate - you might still find them in your change. This edition, however, has a finer proof finish. Intended for collectors, proof coins are struck multiple times with hand finished dies for a high-definition appearance that allows you to appreciate the design as the artist intended. In other respects this coin conforms to the standard specifications of Fifty Pence coins at the time it was struck. Somewhat larger than a modern 50p, this coin has a diameter of 30.00 millimetres and a weight of 13.5 grams. It’s composed of cupronickel. The finish is protected by the original leatherette presentation case. No certificate of authenticity was included with this issue and the coins were not enclosed within capsules. Please be aware that these are pre-owned coins and may display toning, milk spots and minor scratches, commensurate with age.
