2011 UK Fifty Pence piece with Wheelchair Rugby design. This coin is one of twenty-nine designs released to commemorate the 2012 Summer Olympics being hosted in London. The designs for this set were chosen via a public competition hosted by The Royal Mint, who had over 30,000 submissions. The wheelchair rugby design was submitted by Natasha Ratcliffe, who also submitted the chosen handball design. Ratcliffe is an award-winning illustrator and sculpturer, and chose wheelchair rugby due to the sports energy, including athletes slamming into each other and denting wheel guards, which she tried to capture on the coin. The obverse of the fifty pence piece holds Ratcliffe's wheelchair design: a close up of a wheelchair rugby athlete, gritted teeth, ball in lap, pushing the dented wheelchair wheels forward. The background has a series of close diagonal lines. The top centre of the coin has the 2012 Paralympics Logo, and the bottom centre of the coin has the words '50 Pence'. Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen is on the obverse. The 2011 Wheelchair Rugby 50ps are minted in cupronickel alloy to standard Fifty Pence piece specifications (weight: 8.00 grams, diameter: 27.30 millimetres). 1,765,500 of these coins entered circulation. The photograph for this listing is a stock image. The coin you will receive will be in comparable condition and as it was circulated will be much like the coins you find in your change.
