This Nickel-Brass, Cupro-Nickel and Bronze Uncirculated coin set, was released to commemorate the coins of 1990 from The Royal Mint. This 1990 collection is of particular significance due to the resizing of the 5p coin, marking the first change in size and weight of the centuries-old coin, the shilling, for over 100 years in response to a demand for lighter, smaller coins. The first ever shilling was struck by King Henry VII with his own portrait, influenced by European rulers of the time. This 8-piece annual set, celebrates 1990 and hosts the new 3rd Portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, FRSA.
The year 1990
1990 witnessed; Nelson Mandela freed from prison after 27 years, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher resigning after the Poll Tax riots, England reaching the semi-final in the World Cup, and the start of the Gulf War. In the entertainment world, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Home Alone and Pretty Woman hit the silver and small screens, and Madonna set sail on her Blond Ambition Tour which gave us 'Vogue' and changed the face of pop concerts. This Royal Mint 1990 collection marks an extraordinary year for coinage and current affairs, and now you can purchase a piece of this historical year.
BU Coins
Struck at a higher standard than circulating or bullions coins and handled carefully to avoid any damage, Brilliant Uncirculated coins, although not as high value as Proof coins, are ideal for an entry-level collector or to mark an important milestone. This 1990 annual set features all 8 coins, which were in circulation during the course of a very special year.
