Low mintage 1934 silver 'Wreath' Crown: the scarcest issue in the series (S 4036, ESC 374, Bull 3647). Just 932 Crowns were struck by the Royal Mint in this year, intended for important Bank of England customers. These coins get their name from the unique reverse, used only on these issues and created by English artist George Kruger Gray. The design shows a central crown with the date (1934) above, surrounded by a wreath made up of shamrocks, roses and thistles for Ireland, England and Scotland, respectively. The words 'FID · · DEF · · IND · · IMP' are shown above with the denomination below. This is complemented by Bertram Mackennal's classic bare-head portrait of George V with 'GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX' around. Composed of 50% silver, these coins have the same weight and dimensions as earlier .925 sterling silver Crowns. This example has been graded Extremely Fine (EF) by our specialists and will make an excellent addition to any Crown collection.

What Are Wreath Crowns?

'Wreath' Crowns get their name from their distinctive reverse design. These highly collectable silver coins were produced in limited numbers between 1927 and 1936 as holiday gifts to important clients of the Bank of England, leading to their other common name: 'Christmas' Crowns.
