£299.00
George V ‘Christmas’ or ‘Wreath Crown’ from 1927 - first year of this sought-after issue. Obverse: left-facing bare head portrait of George V by Sir Edgar Bertram MacKennal. The artists initials appear on the truncation of George’s neck. The legend around reads: ‘GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX’. Reverse shows crown in centre with date - 1927 - either side of orb. This is surrounded by a wreath of clover, thistles and roses: national flowers for the three kingdoms. ‘CROWN’ at the bottom with ‘FID DEF IND IMP around, divided by flowers. The initials ‘KG’ appear to the right of the lower rose for George Kruger Gray. These Wreath Crowns were stuck in relatively low numbers over a short period of time (between 1927 and 1936) to give as presents. This explains their comparative rarity and popularity. 15,030 were issued in 1927. This example weighs 28.28 grams and has a diameter of 38.6 millimetres. Grade: UNC - A bright coin with the slightest hint of toning and the faintest hairlines and minor scratches: no issues for a grade of Uncirculated. Spink 4036.
