Sought-after 1927 King George V silver proof 'Wreath' Crown (S 4036, ESC 367, Bull 3631). Struck by the Royal Mint decades after Crowns disappeared from circulation, these coins were intended as Christmas gifts for important Bank of England customers. The obverse shows the left-facing modified bare head effigy of George V by Bertram Mackennal with a legend around that reads 'GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX'. The reverse features George Kruger Gray's wreath design, used only on these issues, with a crown and the date (1927) in the centre of a wreath made upf of shamrocks, thistles and roses. The artist's initials and the word 'CROWN' appear below with 'FID · · DEF · · IND · · IMP' above. Just 15,030 'Wreath' Crowns were struck in this year. Minted in 50% silver, this coin boasts a fine, proof finish and has been graded UNC (uncirculated) by our specialists.

What Are Wreath Crowns?

'Wreath' Crowns are UK silver coins minted in very limited numbers between 1927 and 1936. Sometimes known as 'Christmas Crowns', these coins were intended as seasonal gifts for VIP clients of the Bank of England. The name comes from their name from their distinctive reverse design.

The portrait of King George V on the obverse of this 1927-dated coin was created by Australian medallist and sculptor Bertram Mackennal and is surrounded by a legend which reads 'GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX'.

Reverse Of 1927 Wreath Crown

Like all the coins in this short series, the 1927 Wreath Crown features a distinctive design by George Kruger Gray showing a royal crown at the centre of a wreath of shamrocks, thistles and roses with  'CROWN' below and 'FID · · DEF · · IND · · IMP' around. 

50% Silver Historic UK Coin

1927 Crowns have a proof finish and are struck in 28.28 grams of 50% silver, as is typical of British coins in this period. Like earlier milled Crowns, the 1927 Wreath Crown measures 38.6 millimetres in diameter.

Mintage For 1927 Wreath Crown

Only proof Wreath Crowns were issued by the Royal Mint in 1927. Some 15,030 Crowns were minted in this year.
