Buy a 1899 Maundy Set

Attractive 1899 royal Maundy money set from the last years of the reign of Queen Victoria. This set contains a Maundy Fourpence, Threepence, Twopence and Penny, all dated 1895. The obverse of these coins displays the widowed head portrait of Victoria, designed by Thomas Brock, introduced to British coinage in 1893 and scaled for the size of each denomination. The reverse features a crowned numeral within a wreath, a motif first used during the reign of William and Mary hardly altered since 1822. By this point in Victoria’s reign, royal Maundy was being distributed at Westminster Abbey in the name of the Queen, rather than in person as practiced by Elizabeth II. This matching four part set comes in an undated, possibly contemporary case which has some interior lining staining though this does not deter from the coinage. Grade: UNC - Rich medium patina with attractive reflective background colour and lustre.
