1896 Halfcrowns feature the graceful Veiled Head portrait of Queen Victoria, wearing a diadem and veil: a design by Sir Thomas Brock.

Brock also engraved the crowned shield-and-collar motif seen on the reverse. These historic coins were struck in the year that Great Britain won two gold medals at the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic tradition.

  • In 1896, the Royal Mint produced 2,148,505 Halfcrowns in solid .925 sterling silver
