Extremely Fine silver Halfcrown of Queen Victoria, dated 1885. Obverse: type A5 first Young Head portrait of Victoria, facing left, her hair secured with a double ribbon and a tiny braid. Effigy modified from William Wyon’s original engraving for the Queen’s first coinage. Legend reads ‘VICTORIA DEI GRATIA’ with date - 1885 - below. Toothed border and reeded edge. Reverse: crowned, square-topped shield of royal arms surrounded by a wreath of olive leaves, tied at the base with a ribbon. Small national flower emblems below. Legend: ‘BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:’. Engraver: Jean Baptiste Merlen. Victoria reigned from 1837 until 1901 and silver Halfcrown coins were struck in annually in her name from 1839 onwards.
