£225.00
A popular and collectable copper George III Penny, dated 1807 and struck at the Soho Mint in Birmingham under Matthew Boulton’s innovative steam press. The obverse features the laureate and draped bust of the King George the Third facing right. The reverse shows an image of Britannia in drapery, seated on a rock surrounded by waves, a warship with three masts in the distance. By her side is a shield bearing the Union Jack. The ‘SOHO’ mint mark is visible to the lower right of the shield. In her left hand she holds a trident whilst her right hand holds up an olive branch with 10 leaves. The design here is similar to that featured on 1797 ‘Cartwheel’ pennies - both were designed by Conrad Heinrich Küchler - but without the pronounced rim which is here replaced with beading. Ever popular, coins like this are sought after in high grade and have many minute die variations making them very interesting to collect and study.
