A popular and collectable copper Penny of George III, dated 1797. Struck at the private Soho Mint of Matthew Boulton, located near Birmingham, these are commonly called ‘Cartwheel’ Pennies for their large size and wheel-like rim. The 1797 date does not guaranty that this coin was actually minted in this year as Soho Pennies struck between 1797 and 1799 all bore the former date. The obverse of this coin features a draped bust of George II, facing right and wearing a wreath of laurels. A tiny ‘K’ appears to the folds of the drapery, identifying the artist as the German engraver Conrad Heinrich Küchler. The legend appears on the outer rim. The reverse also features a design by Küchler which shows the figure of Britannia, seated on a rocky promontory at sea. She holds a sprig of 10 leaves in one hand and a trident in the other. The flag of Great Britain appears on the shield that rests at her side. In the distance a masted ship can be seen, the waves lap at her feet. The land on which she sits has a tiny ‘SOHO’ engraved below the shield. It’s an iconic British coin and this one is in Good Very Fine condition - it has a dark chocolate patination with good rim edges and no issues for the grade. It weighs 28.35 grams, has a diameter of 36 millimetres and a thickness of 3 millimetres. The edge is plain. These ever popular coins sort after in high grade have many minute die variations making very interesting pieces to collect and study. Spink 3777.
