A superb and fascinating Crown of king George the First, dated 1720 with the overdate 20 over 18, and a further variant of ‘J-type 1’ and ‘Z-type 7’, and faint 2 over 2, all in the date. The obverse features the laureate, armour-wearing bust of George I, facing right. The reverse shows the crowned royal shields in a cruciform pattern, representing England/Scotland, France, Ireland and Hanover. George was the first British monarch of the House of Hanover. In the angles a pair of roses and a pair of plumes can be seen. The edge bears the regnal year ‘SEXTO’. This Crown shows a number of numismatically interesting variants and will make an interesting addition to any collection. Spink 3639.
